Unlike Lee Greenwood, I’m not proud to be an American at this dark moment. But if there’s a silver lining to this low place in which we’ve found ourselves, it could serve as a call to action to make the next 250 years (if we make it that long) better than the last 250. A new history that corrects the USA’s original sin of slavery and its practice of genocide, misogyny, and other forms of cruelty that have been our specialty.
I have always felt the Greenwood song gets everything wrong. “Proud” of what is, for most of us, an accident of birth? Doesn’t seem like the right feeling. Maybe “grateful,” but unless Mr. Greenwood tunneled under the Berlin Wall, worked his way across the Atlantic on a tramp steamer, learned English and passed the naturalization test, I see no reason for him to be “proud.”
Maybe that’s why the MAGAts so hate immigrant Americans: because they will never have the right to feel “proud” that those who actually worked to become Americans do.
Well, if the current regime has its way, the "accident of birth" may be eliminated altogether. The Supreme Court stopped the current effort, but it's appalling to think that the vote was not unanimous. What the heck are those people reading?!
I keep thinking this current mess can't get any worse, and it keeps getting worse.
You'd think that Clarence Thomas and Alito would be all over the possibility of treating everyone like ex-enslaved ppl, but in this particular case they want a discriminatory carve-out. In fact, they are just evil, with a bit of self-loathing mixed in. No, actually omni-loathing.
Watch Thomas pathologically giggling his way through the halls of Congress in an Instagram post by RepublicansagainstTrump (or maybe Moreperfectunion, can't recall).
Dan Starr - Craig Ferguson has a show on CNN on Saturday evenings, it's called "American on Purpose" - so called because he chose to be American. Each episode highlights one great thing about America that made him choose to be American. One episode was about Freedom Of Speech - one was about Freedom of Expression - one was about The American Dream. Each episode is a subtle dig at those who seek to take freedom from other people. Like this post of Andy's, Ferguson reminds us of what our government is supposed to protect - why people want to be American. I think this series is in line with your thoughts.
You have hit the proverbial nail on the head! Not proud--certainly not in these times! Grateful? Even that's a tough one now. But I do remember that I am grateful to those who fought the good fight in WWII and those who fought for the Union and against the evil of slavery in the Civil War, and to those who did their duty in Korea and in Vietnam and to those who did their moral duty by marching against the Vietnam "conflict." (I was part of the "folk song army,"--an easy way to serve.)
Bill Maher's closing monologue this past Friday spoke of many reasons to be a proud American. Take a moment to find it. Perfect we are not and we need to own our most shameful past. The world at large including the United States will, from time to time, spawn the likes of trump. There are more of us than the likes of him. We have come thru worse times and I whole heartedly believe we'll overcome this time as well. If I were the next president I would tell trump don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. Good riddance! I would not spend one nickel of tax dollars to go after him. Let him stew while he watches history trash his name and swinish family.
Andy you are a good man and a good human being. I loved this piece
I do disagree witj just moving on. We have done that in the past
Lincoln allowed those who caused the civil war were welcomed back and proceedef to continue with insisting on having slavery
Nixon was pardoned which some day laid the groundwork for a Trump. We must prosecute all who commit crimes. Not for revenge, but to remain a country of laws and equality under the law.
Lincoln did not welcome them back, and they were debarred from the presidency in the 14th Amendment. The rebellious states had to meet standards to be reinstated in good standing
Dorothy I am totally with you. We will, in my opinion, overcome but unfortunately this tyrant has done so much damage and has not let up on his program of destruction, that it is going to take a significant amount of time to get us back on track. I think of all of the experts in the various agencies that are essential for their successful operation who have been replaced with ignorant sychophants. It will take time and much effort but I do believe that it will happen.
Yes, it will take some time. If a democrat is our next president I hope the country will be patient. There is a mountain of work ahead to restore confidence in our institutions when the right people are put in charge, not a bunch of stooges. Keep the faith!
I fear/am certain our grandchildren - and perhaps generations beyond - will suffer from at least some/most of what Trump and his cohort have done to destroy our country.
Andy, I think this is our "Star Trek" moment. If you recall, the original series used a specific moment in time--which in the 1960s they called World War III--in the 21st century that was so catastrophic it impelled world leaders to put teeth into a global movement for peace, cooperation, and understanding. The terran United Federation became the model for the United Federation of Planets when the Vulcans showed up 2 centuries later. Gene Roddenberry recognized that we would reach a tipping point. We are there.
Andy, I'm still proud to be an American. I'll be prouder when we prosecute him and shun his enablers. The toughest part is forgiveness to our fellow Americans who favored this lethal narcissist. I'm convinced, however, that for this country to thrive in the next 250 years, we have no choice but to prosecute those deserving of it, and forgive those who were gullible and misguided.
I will hold the "gullible" & "misguided" responsible. It's not easy for me to forgive & forget. I've heard the reasoning & the rhetoric from some family members, neighbors & acquaintances. They have tight little hearts & minds where light does not shine. They are consumed by fear of "the other" & blind to the actual causes of the disarray & destruction in our nation.
Oh so true! Thank you for saying this! Many people think we also need a new Constitution, because the current one is so deficient in protecting us from the very tyranny the Declaration of Independence decried, and basically puts us at the mercy of the whims of whatever Supremes we have at any time (eg, a corporation is a person). That is a tall order, and the trick is not how to fix the document (so we don't have to keep passing amendments) but in getting there from here. We can start by committing to getting more people to actually vote in elections, which is just grunt work, but would lead to de-gerrymandered districts, and probably turn Texas purple, even blue. On a positive note, it is expected to be unbearably hot with thunderstorms in DC on the 4th, so basically raining on Donnie's parade and a truly fitting 250th anniversary. Almost makes me believe in a supreme being. Nah.
What we need is bipartisanship or tripartisanship, to work together, for the good of the country, to update the Constitution. Until we get to that point, we're just spinning wheels.
I am proud to be an American because I do not think Trumpism represents Amerrica. The people out on the streets for No Kings Day are the real America. Thanks for this post!
My heart is with you, Andy and the rest of my fellow TBRs, and your missive this morning was true and written with passion. You have always been a much need balm to my soul!
However, I am still proud to be an American, despite the national disaster in Washington and the trickle down insanity to a good chunk of the states. I was born in Boston, the "Hub of the Universe", hah. Although the revolution might not have happened without Boston. One of my direct ancestors came over on the Mayflower, and my 8th great grandfather built the house that John Adams was born in. I have ancestors that fled to Halifax as Loyalists, but more stayed as Patriots in the Boston area and southern NH and fought in the revolution. Did my ancestors do bad things, yes. I have a Georgia ancestor who owned slaves, and in NE, all the land they took from the original Americans, I could go on. But we always seemed to move forward. We the people will prevail, and no incredibly flawed man and his minions will change the heart and soul of this nation. It can't take away the fact that I am a woman, who was the major earner of my family, and spent my career protecting the environment, getting up at 5 AM and taking the train into Boston. We raised two wicked smart, responsible, hard working, funny and kind children, and paid for their education. We own our house, and have retired in comfort and still have our sense of humor. But we also realize how lucky we are, and try to at 69, do what we can to advocate and help others. My husband and I are still proud Americans. We will be protesting on July 4th, peace, love and hugs to you all.
I am not proud of our government, or what the world thinks of us. I will not fly the flag. I still love my country and the good people of it, but won't wax "patriotic" until we are rid of the insanity.
I fly my flag upside down, just as Alito's wife did, to express my concern that the country is in distress. I hope elections are the start of rectifying the situation.
250 years of democracy, admittedly shaky through the years, but held steady by men and women of conviction to adhere to the tenets of a Constitution, forged by individuals who sought freedom from the chains of a hierarchy. And now in we are in peril of that foundation visibly crumbling under one man. Trump. This country is in danger of becoming chained again by another hierarchy, Donald J. Trump and Company.
Amen! And while we are at it, it is time to Impeach the Conservative Justices on this partisan Supreme Court! They practice Legal Malpractice! Userp the Powers of Congress and give everything into the hands of a tyrannical Executive Branch, doing it knowingly!
Andy, we can be proud of this country while being distressed by its leadership. As you have indicated, we have the obligation to work to right the ship of state to prevent our leaders from sinking it. VOTE!!!
Yes! Thanks so much for being the “Thomas Paine” of this centuries political crisis in America! Your words give me some hope….that and the absolutely hysterical issue with the reflecting pond!
This is how it started 250 years ago. A bill of particulars against a mad king. Now we are afflicted with a an orange fat man - who is barking mad - bent on looting our Nation and others. We need to put him in a special cell at Ft. Leavenworth! Thanks, Andy!
He could not be a mad king without the Gang of Six on the Supreme court and the Republican Senators and Republican House of Representatives all preferred by the American Voter.
They played a long game. The RWNJs believed when I was a kid, in the 60s that they had to impose their will on all of 'those people'. They persevered and got what they wanted.
Bravo Andy and Thank you ! That was beautifully written and so eloquently expressed! You are our finest satirist and a national treasure! Keep up the excellent work! We are in a dark place as a country but I thank you for the sanity and laughter and lightness of being you bring into our lives ! ❤️
I understand what you mean. But why should America democracy be indicted when it was less than half the eligible American voters who put him in power? Did you or anybody here do that? As far as indictments go shouldn't it be the large percentage of voters who did not vote and tipped the scales in his favor? Keep in mind also his real supporters even now, are the conservative Christians against abortion. Many of whom are still blissfully ignorant of what he is doing.
My Catholic upbringing compels me to say that if one does not vote when so much is at stake, that can be considered a "sin of omission." I do not forget & I do not forgive when "citizens" do NOT step up to do their duty. Democracy can be messy, but it's what we've got. Let's be earnest in our efforts & try our best to keep it.
The founding fathers warned us about someone like Trump. It’s ironic that
we are dealing with such a creature at the same time we’re celebrating 250 years of our country/constitution, as Trump literally destroys it all. Battles are waged between trump judges and our very real laws as the supreme court justices work behind walls to promote the tearing down of that which they’re supposed to uphold.
Christians are aghast as Vance attempts to out-think the Pope’s stance on human dignity, mercy, and love for the “others”.
Let’s face it,this is just the failed J6 coup two point O, to throw out our constitution. Why? Dictatorial grab for power & riches for the few. Arrest them, try them, LOCK THEM UP
Thank you for writing this serious reminder to all of us about the state of our country/democracy. Forwarding it to friends & family in hopes of waking up more freedom loving Americans.
You have beautifully articulated my own thoughts regarding the treasonous president and his enablers. They must all be held accountable by a tribunal like Nuremberg!
Dear Lord, you’ve taken my favorite actor, Robert Duvall, my favorite comedian, Catherine O’Hara, and my favorite musician, Bob Weir. I just wanted to let you know my favorite president is Donald Trump.
Love your new Declaration of Independence, Andy - keep up the great work, especially (but not only) helping us to laugh. You have my sincerest admiration.
A solid AMEN! Why are there so many dopes ruining, (Ooops! I mean running.), this country? Is Pope Leo the only true and brave man to call out this Trumpian tragedy? Maybe you said it, but I remember a recent quote that basically stated that Dumpy will find some way to ruin the 4th. It makes me sick every day to hear via NPR and decent news agencies how Dumpy Doo is getting away with so much and Congress and the Supreme Court just suck up to him.
I’m ready to sign, in very large letters. Your Declaration is the best way to celebrate 250 years of the republic. Remember Franklin: “A republic, if you can keep it.”
Thank you Andy, we do need a new and positive reset. I have been watching the FIFA world cup and been inspired by the Norwegian fans. Their way of celebrating victory is to row together as a group, that's what we need.
Thank you for starting my day with such an inspiring message! We will keep moving forward to a more perfect union, and your perspective and satire will fuel us.
Good morning, my friends. Sorry there were no jokes in this post, but if you agree with this Declaration, I hope you’ll consider sharing it.
Love,
Andy
Unlike Lee Greenwood, I’m not proud to be an American at this dark moment. Some on the Court are so intoxicated with their power that they just do whatever they want, regardless of the explicit language in the Constitution.
Lee Greenwood also sings “I’m Proud to be a Canadian” to the same music. He would sing he’s proud to be from Uzbekistan if he could sell it.
Dan Starr - Craig Ferguson has a show on CNN on Saturday evenings, it's called "American on Purpose" - so called because he chose to be American. With you on the Nixon pardon though
We do have to remove the proposal that his family is exempt from IRS audits forever

I'm afraid that patience is not one of our better traits, and part of the reason Trump got in a second time. That and a short memory span.
I fear/am certain our grandchildren - and perhaps generations beyond - will suffer from at least some/most of what Trump and his cohort have done to destroy our country.
Not sure about the "we have come through worse times", unless you mean the Civil War which left 700,000 dead.
Perfect, Andy. Thanks. Shared.

Oh but there is a joke. And it sits in the oval office.
I've come to think of Trump as more of an indictment on American democracy than a joke. Jokes are funny. Trump is not.

Everything you have stated is true, devastatingly true. Thank you. It can't be over soon enough.
Morning Andy.
Thank you for writing this serious reminder to all of us about the state of our country/democracy. Forwarding it to friends & family in hopes of waking up more freedom loving Americans.
Done Andy. You are right, no joke!
Thank you Andy.
Bravo!
Love. Love. Love.
Indeed I will!
No apology required.
There are already enough apologists for the moment.
You have beautifully articulated my own thoughts regarding the treasonous president and his enablers. They must all be held accountable by a tribunal like Nuremberg!
I got this gem from my Canadian friend:
Dear Lord, you’ve taken my favorite actor, Robert Duvall, my favorite comedian, Catherine O’Hara, and my favorite musician, Bob Weir. I just wanted to let you know my favorite president is Donald Trump.
You win the Internet for the day!
Wonderful
Perfect 👌
Good one 🤣
<snort laugh> I'm patiently waiting . . .
Love your new Declaration of Independence, Andy - keep up the great work, especially (but not only) helping us to laugh. You have my sincerest admiration.
Thank you for your eloquence, it’s hard to separate out pride in America from disgust and contempt for the actions of a few.
"We hold these lies to be self evident, no man is my equal"
Thank you for your attention to this deception, DJT
Andy I was just thinking a few minutes ago that we needed a new Declaration! And VOILA—you hit it out of the park!!
Thank you! We can do better than we did in the first 250 years.

Thanks, Andy. Much needed.
I will share it far & wide. May your words ring out from sea to shining sea.
Tar-and-feather the whole of them.
And ride them out of Washington on a rail.
Thank you for starting my day with such an inspiring message! We will keep moving forward to a more perfect union, and your perspective and satire will fuel us.
Just so. Thank you, Andy.
