Thanks to all of you for reading Heather's book and proposing questions! I'm really looking forward to interviewing her.

Here is my question for Heather Cox Richardson:

Robert Reich wrote this morning:

“It could result in a loss of as many as 19 seats in the U.S. House and nearly 200 state legislative seats nationwide — and dramatically remake the balance of power in favor of Republicans.THE ROBERTS-ALITO COURT HAS ENSURED THAT DRED-SCOTT AND THE CONFEDERACY ARE REBORN” (Caps are mine).

Does HCR agree? please discuss.

I am so grateful for both of you! Thanks for what you both do. and I know you won’t but, don’t forget the TRUMP-EPSTEIN FILES!!

Where are we on that?

How does she publish an incredible fact filled analysis almost every day? How many staff does she have? What is her process? How many hours does she sleep at night?

Rebecca Warner's avatar

Hardest working person in the sub stack realm.

Mary Madigan's avatar

That’s what I was going to ask!

She has a staff of ONE. A single devoted copywriter. When she spoke at National Cathedral this past February at the invitation of the Dean, Randy Hollerith, she got asked that question. Her copywriter will call or text, going "are you awake? are you awake?" The two of them together roll that immense stone of Sisyphus up the hill, night after night. She also has her wonderful husband and devoted Labrador. I don't know how they do it.

Amazing accomplishment! Maybe asking, “ how many cups of coffee do you drink each day?”

Michael Hertz, MD, MPH's avatar

maybe better question is “does she sleep at night?”

Marilyn Williams's avatar

Great question! I wonder it all the time

Does history ever repeat itself in a positive way? Can you find anything in our past that would suggest that we will come out of our current situation better than before?

What was the reason for establishing the Electoral College? Do we still need it? And, if not, how do we get rid of it?

Stuyvesant Bearns's avatar

I am not a true student of history, but I think the Electoral College was actually introduced as a sort of anti-democratic mechanism for keeping political power out of the hands of the people at large and keepimg it in the hands of the few and the powerful. I would appreciate any light on this subject from anyone who is truly a student of our history.

How do we cope with the knowledge the Republicans refuse to act on Trump’s mal-governing and SCOTUS actually supports keeping Trump in office despite his crimes? I see no way out.

Cindy Froggatt's avatar

If you could interview Trump tomorrow, what would you ask him?

Linda T. Cades's avatar

You have taught college students for a long time. Do you have any sense that younger people are getting more involved in progressive activism of late? Are they paying attention and opposing the Trump administration in whatever ways they can? I am almost 80, and I have noted that at NO Kings protests, for example, the people participating trend older. Much older. I am always heartened when younger people show up.

Our nation went through something similar to what we are going through now in the 1930’s and early 1940’s when the Republican Party supported Hitler to the extent that some Republican members of Congress used their franking privileges to mail out Nazi propaganda. It wan’t until Japan bomber Pearl Harbor that they dropped their opposition to the US getting actively involved in WWII. I fear we are on the same path. Do you share my concern?

LHS's avatar

Great question. I was going to ask about the Wilson administration and WWI, when free speech about the war was surpressed in a very heavy-handed way.

In addition to the increasing misogyny permeating our lives ever more (again) in recent years, what do you project about the future, and timing, of true women's rights, including in the United States the real adoption of the Equal Rights Amendment? THANK YOU for your invaluable work and ongoing edification of us all!

Question for Heather: Where would you start to fix our Constitution?

Mary Gilbert's avatar

Great question!

I want to acknowledge what I feel has made Heather such a standout... It's not just what she says, but the space she has created for people reading her. I feel that’s a big part of why Heather resonates the way she does.

My question is:

Has the response to your work changed the way you see your role as a historian, or reinforced what you always believed it should be?

Because admiration at that scale is powerful, but it can also be narrowing.

AND, I've been an ardent follower since Sept 2019. You're at the top of my list for fantasy dinner dates. 💝

Rosemary Ehle's avatar

I love her. She and Jill Lepore are at the top of my list too.

Shannon Kincaid's avatar

LOVE Jill Lapore!!

Mainers now face a dilemma. Despite her excellent new hairdo, Janet Mills has left us to hold our noses and vote for a man who, at some point, found Nazi tattoos a good idea; and the repugnant Collins. Please comment.

Angela Scott's avatar

Do you see a tipping point? I keep wondering what pushes a society over the edge, like the French just before they started sending people to the guillotine.

Bill Morgan's avatar

Why are Republicans so afraid of Trump that decent Reps and Senators who happen to be Republicans won't do the right thing and vote against the things he does

Marilyn Williams's avatar

BEST QUESTION EVER!!

Phil Ellerin's avatar

Great question! I ask myself that every day-glad you expressed it.

Andy, thank you for hosting "Borowitz Book Club". And a thousand "thanks" and "blessings" for all of your insights, humor and serious discussions. I look forward to your interview with Heather Cox Richardson. My question - There is a longstanding troupe, "the good guys always win". I believe this has allowed many Americans (and I include members of Congress) to continue to sit on the sidelines and watch rather than actively participate in fighting for Democracy? Is our last line of defense the upcoming Midterms?

Rosalind Moulton's avatar

Thank you,Andy, for this opportunity to ask HCR a question: What are the top three actions that average citizens can take to turn the House and Senate Blue at the 2026 mid-term elections and then to ensure a democratic win for president in 2028?

jb from Weston's avatar

Yes, but perhaps MORE pertinent: what can we do to ENSURE THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS ARE EVEN HELD???

...despite his anticipated declaration of a national emergency as pretext to cancel or "delay" them?
