It was a smackdown of Biblical proportions!
On Sunday, TBR hosted a debate between Bishop Mariann Budde and House Speaker Mike Johnson on the true meaning of the Bible—using actual quotes from both participants.
At the conclusion of the debate, readers were asked to decide who understands the Bible better. Here is the result of that poll:
Given the nature of their quotes, this result wasn’t terribly surprising. And yet, many TBR community members did express astonishment—that Johnson somehow managed to eke out one percent. Here are a few of their comments:
Okay, I really want to know who the 1% are who voted for Mike Johnson in this survey.
—A.W.
This is a really funny poll. Who makes up the 1% who picked Johnson?
—C.T.
I see that some person(s) voted for Johnson... It has to be a joke, right?
—T.
Ok, who’s the one percent person? Mike Johnson?
—D.W.
The source of Mike Johnson’s handful of votes is indeed a mystery. But the following two comments from TBR community members may offer a clue:
Oh no! I pushed the wrong button! I should have waited for my first cup of coffee.
--John
Ack! Delete! Delete! Inadvertently hit the wrong button!
--Cindy
Now it all makes sense: I suspect that most of MJ’s votes were in fact from people who clicked the wrong box. But let’s not belittle his achievement. As someone who was barely re-elected Speaker by his own House Republicans, no one knows better than Mike that every vote counts.
The only thing in the Bible he understands is the part by Lee Greenwood
Bishop Budde (or Bishop Mariann, as she prefers to be called) was absolutely stellar on the NPR/WAMU program One-A yesterday. If you have a chance to listen, it will lift your heart. Mike Johnson, by contrast: he is looking more and more like a ferret trying to stare down a coyote.
